It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ellen Katharina Wilhemina Farkouh (nee Niemi), our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, on March 19, 2026, at the age of 89. Ellen was born on September 27, 1936, in South Porcupine, Ontario, to the late Elli and Edward Niemi. Married to the love of her life, Nicolas Farkouh, for over 63 years, she was the proud mother of Michael (Christine), Deena Zmijowskyj and David (Jennifer). Ellen adored her grandchildren, Alexandra (Jacob Carlos), Elizabeth, Nicholas (Leah), Hanna, Isabel, Michael and Andrew. She had two great-grandchildren, Laurel and Griffin. Ellen was predeceased by her brother James, and is lovingly remembered by her sister-in-law Louise and nephew Jason. She is dearly missed by many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ellen Farkouh was raised in a salt-of-the-earth Finnish family filled with love and tradition. Her childhood was shared with her loving sidekick, her younger brother Jimmy. As a young adult, Ellen was a true Renaissance woman. She sang in the church choir, where her angelic voice lifted all those around her. She carried her love of music throughout her life. Ellen was a figure skater and a competitive rhythmic gymnast. In 1960, at the age of 23, Ellen embarked on a European tour that shaped her worldview and love of different cultures. On her journeys, she visited 20 countries and attended the Olympic Games in Rome that same year. Ellen met Nicolas in Elliot Lake, where they started their family and in 1967, they relocated to Sudbury. Ellen was the best mom anyone could ask for. She was a supportive, loving, and ever-present mother who committed her life to her family. Ellen was so proud of her family and was there for every special occasion. She was a fabulous chef and on a moment’s notice, she could put together a delicious and entertaining dinner party for twenty!.

Ellen will always be remembered for her ability to light up a room with her presence. Her smile was infectious, and her genuine kindness towards everyone was unmatched. She embodied the Finnish sisu, showing tenacity and resolve, especially as she battled dementia in her later years. Ellen’s passing leaves a void in the lives of all who knew and loved her. Mom, you have brought happiness and joy to us all. We love you so much, and may we all live our lives with the same joie de vivre that you showed us every day.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the exceptional staff at Pioneer Manor (Mallard Wing) for their kindness, support and care.

A private funeral will be held with her immediate family, and a celebration of life will be held in her honour in the summer in Sudbury (date to follow).

In lieu of flowers, and to honour Ellen’s love of family and children, donations may be made to the Sudbury Manitoulin Children’s Foundation (Send kids to camp) www.smcf.com
