Surrounded by his loving family, Joao passed away on August 29, 2025, at age 80. Cherished husband of over 56 years to Rosa (nee Rocha), whom he loved with all his heart. He was the proud and loving father to Maria (Louis) and Americo (Marisol), as well as the loving grandfather to David, Emily, Matthew and Andrew.
Son of the late Maria Cerqueira and the late Luiz Fernandes of Portugal. Loving brother to the late Lucinda (the late Jose), the late Jose (the late Jorgete), Rosa (the late Joao) and Gloria (Avelino). Loving brother-in-law to his many in-laws, some of whom predeceased him, and many nieces and nephews.
Joao was born in Vila Verde, Portugal on May 27, 1945, and immigrated to Canada in November 1971. He worked at S.K.D. Manufacturing, in Amherstburg, ON, as a machine repair man for 24 years and was involved in several construction projects in the Windsor-Essex County area.
He lived his life entirely devoted to the well-being of his wife, children and grandchildren, all of whom he cherished more than anything and always wanted to spend time with. He will be most remembered for the blanket of love and kindness that he clothed upon his family. His wife, children and grandchildren will forever have him in their hearts and forever miss him. May he enjoy eternal happiness in heaven.
Visitation will be held at Families First Funeral Home (3260 Dougal Ave) on Friday, September 5, 2025 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm; followed by a Funeral Service with location to come.
