Feisty, formidable, faceted, forthright, forgiving, friendly, fun-loving. These adjectives come to mind when remembering Frances Cebulski (née Zochodne). Frances, or Fran to those who knew her, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2026, in the comfort of Hillsdale Manor and in the company of those who loved her and cared for her. Frances, who was the youngest of 5 siblings, was born on February 23, 1930, and grew up in what was then rural south Oshawa. When not fully occupied with raising 3 children, Frances worked as an administrative assistant in architectural, textile manufacturing, and real estate establishments. She was a reliable and competent employee, particularly skillful in her relationships with customers, clients, and colleagues.
Frances enjoyed people and loved to laugh and to induce laughter in others. She was quick to see the humour in everyday situations, and to make fun of herself in the process. Following her children whom she introduced to the sport, Frances also took up alpine skiing when she was in her 30s, and was a regular at the Oshawa Ski Club well into her 70s. She enjoyed the social life in the clubhouse as much as her adventures on the slopes. In the warmer weather she could be found beside her pool enjoying sun and relaxation, as well as occasional frolicking with her children and grandchildren. Along with her fun-loving, friendly side, was a feisty and formidable woman who was not shy to call out miscreants or to defend her rights.
Frances was predeceased by her husband Anthony (Tony). She is survived by her children Larry, Randy, and Laurie, and by her 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. “Baba” to her grandchildren, Fran or Frannie to those who knew her and cared for her, she will be remembered and deeply missed.
A burial and brief memorial service will be held at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Whitby, Ont., at 12 noon, Tuesday October 27, 2026. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada (https://www.alzheimer.ca > donate).
