Allan Joseph William Furlong

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Allan Furlong of Oshawa, Ontario. Allan was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and a great friend to many. He leaves behind his wife, Mary; his children, Katie and Michael (Meredith); and his six grandchildren, Abby, Luke, Danielle, Zack, Ainsley, and Emmersyn, as well as his great-granddaughter Amelia.
He was reunited in passing with his brother Norman and is survived by his brothers Wayne (Deirdre) and Gary (Suzanne) and his sister Carol (Andre).
Allan attended the University of New Brunswick, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. A natural people person with a drive to help others, he was involved in student affairs, including the Winter Carnival and yearbook committees. Growing up in Rouyn-Noranda, he developed a deep love for hockey, which he carried into university, playing varsity hockey for three years. Known as “Bullet Furlong,” he was later inducted into the university’s hockey hall of fame. His passion for the sport continued into adulthood, including 25 years of old-timers’ hockey.
Allan’s career in government affairs began at the Treasury Board of the Government of New Brunswick as a Budget and Management Analyst. His interest in law led him back to university, where he earned his LLB degree. It was during this time that he met Mary, and they shared 56 wonderful years together. After completing law school, Allan and Mary moved to Oshawa, where he joined the firm Salmers and Furlong.
Though new to Oshawa, Allan quickly became involved in the community. He was elected to the Durham Region Separate School Board and played an active role in both the Provincial and Federal Liberal parties. In 1987, he was elected MPP for Oshawa/Whitby, where he successfully advocated for extending GO Train service to Whitby and later Oshawa. He also served as President of the Liberal Party of Ontario.
Allan’s dedication extended beyond politics. He served as President of the Oshawa and District Association for Community Living, Chairman of the Oshawa Harbour Commission, and President of the Oshawa Golf Club, where he was an active member for 45 years. He was appointed to the Board of Governors of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and proudly served on the Durham Region Police Services Board for 10 years.
Allan’s legacy of kindness, friendship, family, and community involvement will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. May he rest in peace.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph the Worker Parish, 1100 Mary Street North, Oshawa, on Friday, March 7, 2025, at 10:30 a.m.. Cremation to follow.
