GILBERT, Joseph Albert “Abb” Gilbert

Beloved husband of Elizabeth for over 65 years, loving father of Warren (Kathleen), Regan (Geoff), Celine and Fraser (Leslie). He will be sadly missed by his seven grandchildren: Keeli, Harrison, Chandos, Gage, Simpson, Seth and Jocelyn, and four great grandchildren. Abb will also be fondly remembered by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

An engineering graduate of General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan, Abb spent his professional career of 43 years at General Motors in Oshawa; retiring in 1993.

Abb was a consummate athlete who excelled in everything he did. He was a standout pitcher for Oshawa’s minor league baseball, a ski instructor, a sailor, and an avid golfer most proudly achieving the coveted hole-in-one.
Dedicated to serving his community, Abb was a longstanding member of the Rotary Club of Oshawa and served as Club President from 1996 to1997. He was also a devoted volunteer with the John Howard Society of Durham Region for more than 20 years, and a lifelong faithful parishioner at St. George’s Anglican Church.
A service and celebration of life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Abb’s memory to St. George’s Anglican Church, The Rotary Club of Oshawa or the John Howard Society would be appreciated.
