Marie Anita Goestl

August 14, 2025

Woman sitting at a table, in thought.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Marie Anita Goestl. Marie peacefully and gently left this earthly plane surrounded by the love of her family on Saturday, June 14th, 2025, at 9:25 a.m.

Predeceased by her parents Marie & Andrew Gagnon, her eldest brother Jack Gagnon, beloved sister Doris Louttit, and her adored “hairy grandson” Benji, Marie will be dearly missed by her loving children: Mark Gagnon (Jennifer Lindsay), Kelly Vincent (Rob), Melanie Goestl (Darlene Lofgren), and Jennifer Goestl, as well as the love of her life, John Goestl.

She is survived by her cherished grandchildren: Nicolette Vincent, Andrew Gagnon, Dallas Vincent, Lindsay Gagnon, and Tyler Gagnon; her dear siblings Alfred Gagnon, Andy Gagnon (Holly), Pauline Gagnon, and Marilyn Gagnon; and many beloved nieces and nephews of the Gagnon clan.

Born on the banks of the Missinaibe River, Marie’s early years were spent in Mattice and several towns across Northern Ontario, before raising her family in Vancouver and Toronto.

A warrior woman in life, Marie’s strength, courage, faith, and resilience inspired all who knew her. Her humor, intelligence, and joyous spirit were unforgettable. Marie loved music, art, reading, writing, animals, nature, and especially her children and grandchildren.

As a “little girl from Mattice,” she lived many adventures, including traveling to Paris, Italy, London, and Cuba with her daughter Jennifer. She treasured family, her career in public service, and her role as a mother and grandmother above all else.

Marie’s wisdom and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Her message to her family: “Do well, love others, and don’t make a mountain out of a molehill.”

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Osgoode Care Centre — especially Janet, Danika, Jason, Jordan, and her dear Patrick — for their compassionate care and connection with Marie in her final years.

A gathering to honor Marie and a ceremony for her ashes will be held at a later date.
