It is with great sadness that we announce that Grant Carter Fumerton of Kelowna BC, has passed away on September 14, 2026 at the age of 92.
Grant was born in Kelowna to parents Frank and Gertrude Fumerton and was raised attending local schools, and eventually helping in the iconic family department store, Fumerton’s, in downtown Kelowna. He went on to manage the store until its closure in 1985.
Grant had a passion for the outdoors and loved fishing and hunting. He enjoyed living by the Okanagan Lake, boating and waterskiing, and could be seen on skis well into his 80s! He also loved teaching his children and grandchildren to waterski, as well as fishing and hunting whenever possible. Fishing/Hunting was a passion he shared with his daughter Sheri and his son Shane (who tragically predeceased him in 1995), but he went on to mentor Shane’s son Kyle, and took him on many outdoor trips, right up until this past July. Grant was also an avid snow skier and started Sheri on skis at age 3, and it was something he also did with her into his 80s.
Grant got his pilot’s license in 1983 and owned a Cessna 172 for many years. He enjoyed flying to see his wife’s family up in northern Alberta and out East to Saskatchewan, as well as many trips around BC and into the states. He took photographers up to do real estate photos as well.
In his spare time Grant fixed up a classic car, a 1958 Ford Fairlane Convertible, and delighted in the tradition of taking the family out for a ride to DQ in the summertime. He liked motorbiking, playing the piano, doing yard work, and tinkering to get a little more life out of things. He built a unique flat-bottom speedboat that was heard across the lake for many summers. He enjoyed doing some travelling and always looked forward to his trips up north to the quiet of the countryside.
Grant was predeceased by his parents Frank and Gertrude; sister Gail Johnston; son Shane; and first wife Helen. He is survived by his wife, Joy Fumerton; daughter Sheri Montcalm; daughter-in-law Carey Fumerton; grandson Kyle Fumerton; step-children, Corry Heinricks and Christopher Leachman; as well as 4 step-grandchildren and 5 step-great-grandchildren.
Springfield Funeral Home is honoured to serve the family of Grant Fumerton, and at the family’s request, there will be no funeral at this time. A private interment was held on September 22, 2026, at the Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery.
