GREATRIX, George Garnet Greatrix

He passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family, at the age of 73.

Born on December 12, 1952, in Belleville, Ontario, Garnet was the son of George Thomas Greatrix and Viola May (Everetts) Greatrix. A bright and thoughtful mind from an early age, Garnet pursued a distinguished career in Civil Engineering, earning degrees from Queen’s University and McMaster University.

Garnet began his professional career at Stelco and later worked with Foster Wheeler and The Greer Galloway Group Inc. Among his many accomplishments, he was especially proud of his work as a Project Manager at Metrolinx, where he played an instrumental role in constructing the UP Express that connects Toronto’s Union Station to Pearson International Airport.

Most recently residing in Peterborough with his beloved spouse, Lucia Bohórquez, Garnet built a life centred around family, humour, thoughtful planning, and meaningful connection.

George Garnet Greatrix will be deeply missed by his loving family: Geoffrey Greatrix (Dana Bourque), Richard Greatrix (Katie), Daniela Sheinin (Jacques Vest), Gabriela Sheinin (Luke Gagliardi), and Micaela Sheinin. Garnet was a proud grandfather to Jasmine, Arya, Sawyer, Alex, Charlie, and Landon, all of whom brought him immense joy.

He is lovingly remembered by his sisters, Gail Cruickshank (predeceased by Robert) and Darlene Rogers (Brian), and will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews, extended family, and many dear friends.

He also leaves behind Maisy, his much-loved cat and constant companion.

Garnet was a pleasant, intelligent man who was always open to conversation and quick to share a joke. He loved thoughtful planning — whether organizing a travel itinerary, making sure the best deal had been found, or securing a coveted corner hotel room. He had a lifelong passion for tennis and spent many happy hours at White Oaks in St. Catharines and Quaker Park Tennis Club in Peterborough. He also found great joy in cottage life on Lower Buckhorn Lake, especially fishing from his kayak and spending time with loved ones.

Garnet believed in the value of hard work and preparation. He often repeated his father’s saying, “I’ve been lucky all my life,” while reminding those around him that luck follows the effort and work you put in.

In retirement, Garnet remained deeply engaged in the community and rediscovered passions that brought him joy throughout his life. Dedicated to giving back, he proudly served as both Chair and Board Member of the Little Lake Cemetery Company. He also reconnected with longtime interests, assisting with lighting productions through the Peterborough Theatre Guild and returning to music by playing trumpet with the New Horizons Band. Retirement for Garnet was never about slowing down; it was about staying involved, contributing, and continuing to pursue the things that brought meaning and connection to his life.

Visitation will take place on Friday, June 12, 2026, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A chapel service, officiated by Garnet’s longtime friend and tennis partner, Lyle Horn, will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. Both will take place at Highland Park Funeral Centre in Peterborough. Garnet will be remembered for his sharp mind, kind conversation, sense of humour, careful planning, and the pride he took in building lasting things, from important public projects to treasured family memories.

In lieu of flowers, the family would gratefully welcome donations to Hospice Peterborough, in recognition of the compassionate care and support provided.
