It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of (Hubert) Francis Cooke on September 12, 2026, in Clarington, Ontario.
Hubert Francis Cooke was born on September 5, 1940, in Kingston, Jamaica. He married the love of his life, Maria Elise Cooke (DePass), in 1964, beginning a remarkable partnership that spanned 62 years. Together, Francis and Maria built a life and family that became his greatest legacy. He was a devoted father to his four children, Erica (Radhouane), Matthew, Allison (Anthony), and Suzanne (Sean), and a proud and loving grandfather to Elisa, Marcus, Laila, Malek, Claire, and Aiden.
Francis’ life was filled with adventure, curiosity, and an unwavering determination to learn and experience everything he could. He pursued countless interests such as his love of music, racing motor cars, owning race horses, flying planes, boating, hunting, and playing cricket and tennis; however, fishing was his passion. More than a pastime, fishing was a part of who he was and a passion he lovingly passed down to his children and grandchildren. As Francis would say, “Every day was a fishing day, but not every day was a catching day.” Perhaps it was also his way of living—showing up, enjoying the journey, and making the most of every day. His love of the water and the memories he created there will live on in the generations who follow.
Francis was a man of unwavering principle, strength, and dignity. Generous beyond measure, he was always ready to lend a helping hand, share his wisdom, or bring much-needed laughter to those around him. He was a cherished member of The Point, Drifters, St. George’s Old Boys’ Association, and Mary, Gate of Heaven Church in Negril. His unmistakable presence and benevolence touched countless lives.
Francis will be remembered for the relationships he built, the stories he shared, and the unmistakable presence he brought wherever he went.
