JOHNSON, Thomas Johnson
September 21, 2025
peacefully left this world, bearing the same dignity and quiet strength that defined his extraordinary life. After a courageous twenty+ year journey with Parkinsonβs disease, Tomβs passing was as he most deserved: surrounded by the unwavering love of his family.
Born in Cranbrook, BC, and raised in Langley, Tom displayed a remarkable intellect and strong character from an early age. An honour student at the University of British Columbia, Tomβs academic achievements were just the beginning of a legacy built on dedication, service, loyalty and integrity.
Tomβs path led him to the Ministry of Transportation & Highways, where fate introduced him to his beloved wife, Isabelle, in Princeton, BC. Together, their story blossomed, and in 1969 they celebrated the arrival of their cherished daughter, Heather, in Victoria.
A champion for both family and community, Tomβs professional journey is woven deeply into the fabric of British Columbia and Canada. As Deputy Minister of Transportation & Highways and later, Environment & Parks, Tomβs leadership and vision contributed to projects that transformed the province, including:
- The Lions Gate Bridge counterflow traffic lane reversal system
- The Coquihalla Highway Phase 1 and 2
- The Alex Fraser Bridge and Highway System
Tomβs commitment to public service radiated far beyond his official roles. In the private sector with JJM Construction, his wisdom and humility shaped not only the JJM organization but also institutions such as:
- VANOC β Olympic Venue Construction Advisory Committee
- BC Construction Safety Network
- BC Roadbuilders & Heavy Construction Association
- Columbia River Treaty Permanent Engineering Board
Tom and Isabelle found purpose and joy in the BC Roadbuilders & Heavy Construction Associationβcherishing the vibrant community and forging bonds that lasted a lifetime.
Yet, Tomβs greatest legacy rests not in his titles or public works, but in the enduring devotion he held for his family. His accomplishments, though substantial, were always secondary to the pride, kindness, and love he shared with those dearest to him.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honour Tomβs memory by supporting the PACIFIC PARKINSONβS RESEARCH INSTITUTE, in Tribute to Thomas Johnson (For further information, contact Kathryn Pearson PACIFIC PARKINSONβS RESEARCH INSTITUTE 604 681 5031). Through this, Tomβs spirit of grace, courage, and service will continue to make a difference for years to come.
