LAI, Esther Hang Chun Lai

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Esther Hang Chun Lai, who passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 12, 2025, in Toronto, at the age of 87, due to heart failure.

Esther was born in 1937 in Taishan, Guangdong Province, China, the third of eight children. Her family later immigrated to Hong Kong, where she spent most of her childhood and early adult life. Even as a young woman, Esther was full of energy and joy—she loved dancing, playing basketball, and ping pong. She also showed a strong entrepreneurial spirit from a young age, running her own children’s clothing shop in Hong Kong.

Later in life, Esther immigrated with her family to Venezuela, where they established and successfully managed a supermarket business. Esther dedicated much of her life to this business, where her determination, discipline, and keen sense for commerce helped support her family and community.

Esther was known for her cheerful demeanor—rarely seen without a smile—and for her strong yet compassionate nature. She was a woman who knew what she wanted, yet always remained kind-hearted and willing to help those in need.

About 40 years ago, Esther accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized in Tucson, Arizona. Her faith remained a guiding light throughout her life.

She was also a talented cook and an avid knitter, who brought warmth and care into everything she did. After retiring, she spent her later years living between the United States and Canada, enjoying time with family and friends.

Esther was predeceased by her beloved husband Shui Lung, as well as her daughter Betty and son Mitchell. She will be lovingly remembered by her surviving family members and friends around the world.

Her legacy of strength, compassion, and joy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
