LEUNG, Dennis Kai Lau Leung
June 15, 1938 - June 22, 2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dennis Leung Kai Lau(梁繼瀏), who died peacefully on June 22, 2025 at Scarborough Health Network- Birchmount Hospital in Toronto, just one week after celebrating his 87th birthday. Born in Hong Kong on June 15, 1938 to Leung Ngan (Bun Keung)/梁奀(本強) and Ho Lai Chun/何麗珍, Dennis was a man defined by his unwavering dedication to his family, his remarkable resilience, and his infectious sense of humour.
Dennis’ early life in Hong Kong was marked by challenges. His childhood was during the Second World War. He was forced to leave school after his father fell ill and passed away, leaving Dennis, as the oldest son, with significant responsibilities. Despite this, he embarked on a distinguished career. Starting in low-level general labour, he rose to become a manager of an air travel service and then an air freight company in Hong Kong. He met Yolanda/小慧, the love of his life, when she was just fifteen years old. They were married in 1962.
In April 1974, with incredible courage and foresight, they immigrated to Toronto, Canada, with their two young children, Deborah and Gary. Dennis continued his career, most notably with Emery Worldwide serving business clients, where he retired in 2003. What he cherished most about his work was interacting with people, both customers and colleagues, bringing joy and laughter to his office environment.
Dennis was fun-loving and adventurous. In his younger days, he enjoyed camping and fishing and throughout his life he loved getting together with friends for Mahjong. Upon retirement, he and Yolanda embarked on 16 years of world travel, often on cruise ships with friends and family, visiting countless places and indulging his love for diverse cuisines. Dennis was meticulous in all he did; everything was neat and well-organized. His family often joked that if he had formal training, he could have been a master craftsman or inventor of the spreadsheet.
He was most known for his wonderful sense of humour, which lightened many rooms. His nephews and nieces, in particular, adored him and fondly thought of him as the “fun uncle”, a role he embraced with immense joy, revelling in their love. He served as a father figure, travel companion, and dear friend to many of them. Within his immediate family, he was a pillar of strength, an extremely dedicated husband and father who did all the right things and all the hard things to ensure his family was well taken care of and on the best possible trajectory. It was in his role as grandfather, though, that he was able to thoroughly delight in the results of his hard work.
Dennis was most proud of the life he and Yolanda built, lifting their multi-generational family from extremely modest means in Hong Kong to a life where his children and grandchildren have flourished. His move to Canada in 1974 was a testament to his profound dedication to uplifting future generations, a goal he far surpassed.
Dennis is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Yolanda Leung Tsui Siu Wai/梁崔小慧. He was a loving father to Deborah Tang Leung Man Yin/梁孟賢 (Shee-Chang Tang/鄧樹鏘), and to Gary Leung Man Hay/梁孟禧 (Lisa Vincent). He was a cherished grandfather to James Leung Jyu Ho/梁鑄豪(Katerina Leung), Kai Leung Jyu Chuen/梁鑄全 (Emily Parker) and Sabrina Tang Wei-Chun/鄧惠聰. He is also survived by his older sister Leung Yun Tim/梁潤甜(the late Chan Wing Shui/陳永瑞), and was predeceased by his younger brother Francis Leung Kai Sum/梁繼森 (Teresa Ho Chi Han/何智嫺). Dennis leaves behind a large and loving circle of nephews, nieces, extended family and friends who will deeply miss his warmth, wisdom, and laughter.
A celebration of life will be held on the afternoon of Saturday, July 12, 2025 in Toronto. There will be no visitation. Dennis will be cremated and his ashes will be spread according to his wishes.
