LUNDY, John Edward Lundy

Died peacefully on March 4, 2026, surrounded by his adoring family in the Palliative Care Unit at Bridgepoint Hospital.

John was a man of many words. He led with love, laughter, music, storytelling, compassion, and knowledge. In his very full life, he was an adoring husband of 55 years to Aileen (née Teevens), and a loving father to Liz (Dave), Catherine (Farid), and John (Maja). He was a doting grandfather to Amelia, Sam, Lila, Adam and Kian. He was the beloved son of Doris and John Joseph, brother of Frances (Peter), Maryanne, Loretta, and brother-in-law of Maureen. He was the much-loved uncle of Sarah, Genna, Dave, Matt, Michelle and Nicole. He was cherished by his many cousins and diverse community of friends and neighbours.

Professionally, John was a respected academic, educator, sociologist, writer, linguist, researcher, and statistician. He was a highly regarded colleague at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Nipissing University in North Bay, Lasalle Secondary and St. Charles Secondary Schools in Sudbury, and École Secondaire de Hanmer. His professional roles included serving as the first Director of the School of Education and Professor Emeritus at Laurentian University, Associate Professor at Nipissing University, Department Head at Lasalle Secondary, and, among many other appointments, serving as President of the Association of Canadian Deans of Education, and Vice-Chair of the Ontario Association of Deans of Education. His late career research focused on equity, inclusion and multiculturalism in Canadian education.

Personally, John was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. What brought John the greatest joy was holding hands with the love of his life, his wife Aileen, with whom he shared a beautiful love story. The life wisdom imparted to his children, the board games he played with his grandchildren, the corny puns which made everyone laugh, and the gigantic hugs that comforted any weary heart will be the memories that remain.

John’s passing is an immense loss, however he would want everyone to continue doing what makes them happy, curious and above all else, kind.

We are indebted to the incredible team of health professionals who helped John cope with and manage his Atypical Parkinsonism disease. Thank you to Dr. Gerald White, Dr. Sarah Lidstone, Dr. Gabor Kovacs, and Brenna Kelly. The compassionate care from Ontario Health at Home, HomeInstead, Dr. Rebecca Coleman, Dr. Kieran Quinn and the incredible RN team at Bridgepoint Health made John’s final weeks peaceful.

John strived to learn and to teach, even in his final days. He taught others how to live well, and how to navigate a very challenging neurodegenerative disease with grace, dignity and advocacy. Ever the researcher and collector of data, John donated his brain to the Movement Disorders Clinic at University Health Network (UHN) in the hopes of better understanding Atypical Parkinsonism.

John did not want a funeral but instead asked that his family and close friends celebrate his life privately in the spring. Condolences and memories can be left at Aftercare Cremation and Burial Services. www.aftercare.org/obituaries/

To honour John, the family would be delighted to know that you raised a glass (of hopefully exceptional wine) and shared a great memory of John with your loved ones. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John’s memory to support the “Movement Disorders Clinic Brain Donation Research Program”, at UHN Foundation. Please visit uhnfoundation.ca/tribute and select “other” and specify “Movement Disorders Clinic Brain Donation Research Program” or call 416-603-5300 for further information.
