It is with deep sadness that the family of Macario (Cary) Zarate announces his passing on September 18, 2026 in Toronto, Ontario.Cary will be remembered for his care and compassion to his family and friends. Macario Onas Zarate was soft-spoken and always generously offered kind words and encouragement with a smile. He loved living and exploring around downtown Toronto, always at least one of his dogs, or his best friend Cezar, enjoying the city and meeting many people. Cary was born in Kalibo, Aklan, Philippines on July 28,1953. In 1981, he moved to Spain, living in Valencia and then in Barcelona. He managed to his own business, selling Philippine-made products while also taking Business courses. He became Spanish Citizen and travelled to many parts of Europe before immigrating to Canada in 1992 to join his siblings in Toronto. Determined to further his education, he enrolled at the University of Toronto and obtained an Honour’s Degree minor in Literature and Film from Victoria College in 2006. Cary is survived by his mother Mrs. Peregrina Oñas Zarate and his siblings Jane Elloran(Victorio), Janice Zarate (Peter) Juliet Zarate (Ronald) and Dionex Zarate, his nieces Genevieve, Babylyn and Maria Victoria, his great nephews and great nieces and of course, the love of his life, Lucky and Skype. He was predeceased by his father Rafael G. Zarate and his brother, Fr. Rev. Adelbert O. Zarate.A private funeral Mass will be held for family only. We ask for prayers for the eternal repose of Cary’s soul.
