MADELINE, Nora Madeline
October 10, 1934 - December 14, 2025
Daughter of the late Francis Landriau and Dorcas Landriau (Kelly). Sister of Ann and Julie Cassidy, both deceased.
Survived by her loving husband John Martyn of 61 years. Loving and proud Mother of Gregory (Heather) and Michael (Glorilyn). She will also be remembered by her daughter-in-law Marjan Nezarati. Greatly missed by grandchildren Kian, Anahita, Greyson, and Leo.
As a young woman, Nora’s spirit of adventure took her to England for two years. These years influenced a love of travel and theatre that stayed with her for the rest of her life. After John’s retirement they travelled to many parts of the globe, sailing as far north as the Arctic and as far south as Tasmania. Pictures of these travels show her wearing her familiar multi-coloured toque and ubiquitous turquoise jackets and windbreakers. She was often heard to say she had a ‘purple passion for turquoise’
She came to Peterborough in 1961 to teach English and French at PCVS. Her training in professional theatre make up led to her assisting John in preparing for a Christmas production. Their friendship was established after several cups of coffee (Bokar). Friendship grew until marriage on July 1, 1965. Their loving partnership continued for 61 years.
Nora is an original member of the Peterborough Theatre Guild and an Inductee to the Pathway of Fame. During years at the Guild she worked in makeup, acting, costumes, stage design and management. Her major contribution to to community theatre was directing several productions for the Guild including receiving Best Director for two Theatre Ontario Festival productions. In addition to her work in theatre Nora volunteered for many years with Telecare as a supportive voice on the telephone and a facilitator for Hospice grief groups. For a few years she sang rebellious songs with the Raging Grannies and comforting songs with the Hospice singers.
Nora died peacefully on December 14 at Hospice surrounded by the warmth and love of family. The family is grateful to the health care teams on B6, the palliative wing of PRHC, and the compassionate attendants at Hospice.
A private family Funeral service is planned for December 27th and a public service will be held in Highland Park Funeral Centre on Sunday, December 28th at 2:00pm with a light luncheon to follow.
