MAGERMANS, Martinus Christianus Magermans

He is now reunited with his sweetheart Thea. A proud husband, business owner, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Martin passed away peacefully on May 24, 2026. He is predeceased by his wife Thea (Vonk), his parents, Albertus and Aleida and his siblings, Joke and Jans. He is survived by his children: Angela (Tom), Tony (Jill) and Dorothy (Ray), his grandchildren: Jenna (Rob), Shannon (Taylor), Hayley (Dan), Patrick, Sean (Hunter), Jack (Amy), Adam (Karly), Elana and Danielle, and his great-grandchildren: Rosalind, Arden, Lillian, Nellie, Hugh and Rory.

Martinus Christianus Magermans is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members in The Netherlands. After surviving World War II as a child and subsequently serving in the Dutch Army, Martin was ready to face any challenge. He and his new bride, Thea, emigrated to Canada from The Netherlands in 1957. In 1960 Martin began his career as a business owner, starting his independent insurance brokerage. This business continued to grow and thrive over the years eventually developing into Magermans and Raes Insurance Brokers Ltd. Throughout the years, Martin was actively involved in his community.

He was instrumental in the formation of The St. Willibrord Credit Union Sarnia branch. He was also involved in many community organizations including the Canadian-Belgium Dutch Club, Knights of Columbus, Toastmasters and the Sarnia Cross Country Ski Club. Martin had a passion for music and spent more than 5 decades entertaining crowds with his saxophone skills in local bands. Martin has said one of his greatest decisions was the purchase of his cottage on the Bruce Peninsula.

There he was able to relax, enjoy the outdoors and his love of watersports. He was also proud he was able to share this with generations of his family. Martin spent his last few years at Vision Nursing Home in Sarnia. His family would like to thank the staff for their excellent care, patience and compassion. Martin was hard-working, determined, fiercely loyal and passionate.

He will be missed. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., with family and friends being received from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to Vision Nursing Home or the St. Vincent du Paul (cheques only at the funeral home please).
