MALONEY, Ellery Bernard Maloney

It is with profound sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Ellery Bernard Maloney on July 31, 2026 at the age of 95 years. Ellery was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather and great-grandfather, respected businessman, loyal friend, and a man of unwavering faith.

Ellery is now reunited with his beloved wife, Melinda Maloney (née Bonneville), with whom he shared 67 wonderful years of marriage. He was predeceased by his parents, Bernard J. Maloney and Flora Jane Maloney (née Barker), and by his sister Eunice Minard (late Ken). Ellery leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory: his children Debi Brodie (Brian), Julie Baccin (Lou), and Shawn Maloney (Pam). He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren Jordan (Krystyne), Adam (Janelle), Noah, Carolyn, Bradley (Erin), and Christopher (Jolene), as well as his treasured great-grandchildren Alexander and Myla, and Shea.

Ellery will be remembered for his quiet kindness, generosity, and compassion for others. His deep Catholic faith guided his decisions and strengthened him through life’s challenges. He believed wholeheartedly in the power of prayer, and lived each day with humility and gratitude.

Ellery embraced life with enthusiasm and quiet confidence. He loved the game of golf, enjoying countless hours on the course with friends, and sitting on his deck, overseeing putts for par on the ninth green. As the son of the Cornwall Jailkeeper, he often recounted tales of his childhood living at the Cornwall Jail. He found happiness in the simple pleasures: perfectly barbecuing a one-inch medium-rare steak, enjoying a Coffee Crisp and Pepsi (no ice). Whether it was welcoming visitors with a twinkle in his eye, or gathering around the table with those he loved, Ellery made everyone feel valued.

Hockey played an important role in Ellery’s life. One of his proudest accomplishments was being invited to attend the Chicago Blackhawks training camp. The friendships formed through the sport, particularly with the Calumet hockey community, remained some of his most treasured throughout his life. These connections later informed his career in business and finance.

Ellery was a man who believed in taking risks that often brought great rewards—if not financial, then personal and relationship-based. He had a taste of entrepreneurship when he opened his own burger shack on Sheik’s Island, and bought a dump truck to haul away debris during the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Ellery became the owner of Miller Hughes Ford in July 1969, and quickly earned the respect of colleagues, employees, and customers alike through his honesty, loyalty, and genuine care for people. He understood that lasting success was built on trust, strong relationships, and treating others with fairness and respect. The friendships he formed through his business were among the greatest rewards of his career and continued to enrich his life long after the workday was done.

Those who knew him will remember not only his wisdom, but also his compassionate understanding of others. He listened without judgement, offered advice with humility, and led by example. His warmth, wit, gentle spirit, and unwavering loyalty touched countless lives. Ellery also believed deeply in giving back to his community, and quietly supported many charities, including the Shriner’s Hospital For Children.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who visited, supported, prayed for, and cared for Ellery throughout his life, and especially during his final six months. The kindness shown by neighbours, lifelong friends, golf buddies, and extended family brought immeasurable comfort and will never be forgotten.

Although our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that Ellery is now at peace, reunited with his beloved wife, Melinda, and his Lord and Saviour. His beautiful soul will always be remembered for a life defined by purpose, faith, integrity, kindness, and an unwavering love for family and community.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at Wilson Funeral home, 822 Pitt Street, Cornwall, on Thursday, August 6, 2026 from 2:00PM-4:00PM and 6:00PM-8:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Precious Blood Parish, Glen Walter on Friday, August 7, 2026 at 11:30AM, with reception to follow at the Cornwall Golf and Country Club from 12:30PM-2:30PM. Private interment at St. Columban Cemetery, Cornwall.
