helen marchuk oshawa on obituary 225x300

MARCHUK, Helen (Lena) passed away peacefully at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at the age of 96. Predeceased by her husband, Paul, siblings Mary, George, and Dorothy, and many close friends. Loving mother of Marcy (Gord). She will be sadly missed by her nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Helen was born and raised in Oshawa and grew up in the Ukrainian community of Bloor Street. She was strongly connected to St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, where as a young girl, she sang in the choir, was married there, and attended Sunday service regularly. She was very proud of her Ukrainian heritage. Helen lived on Bloor Street for over 40 years before moving to Little Britain in 1970. She resided in Little Britain for 30 years on a hobby farm and enjoyed cooking, gardening, and canning from her massive vegetable garden. Helen moved back to Oshawa in 2000 and, after her husband Paul passed away, lived with her daughter for 8 years in the company of two Bernese Mountain dogs who she loved dearly.

A special thank you to Sarah Toi, her PSW and family friend, for taking such good care of her over the past five years. A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on F Wing, 6th floor, and the PSWs from Senior Helpers.

Visitation: Oshawa Funeral Home, 847 King Street West, Oshawa, on Sunday, December 1st, from 4 – 8 p.m.

Funeral Service: Held in the Chapel at Oshawa Funeral Home on Monday, December 2nd, at 10:30 a.m., followed by interment at Thornton Cemetery.

In celebrating Helen’s life, a lunch will take place immediately after the interment at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 31 Bloor Street East.

Memorial donations to Community Care Durham or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Memories and notes of condolence may be shared at Oshawa Funeral Home.
