Margaret Josephine Widgett

Margaret Widgett (nee Gilmour) passed peacefully on April 23, 2025. She lived her life well and will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She is predeceased by her husband Ron, her parents Mary and Archibald, and siblings Rose, Bill, and John. Margaret is survived by her sons, Brian (Elaine) and Steven (Micheline); grandchildren Ian (Amy), Keith, Samantha (Ryan), Conor (Lauren) and Catherine; her great grandchildren Theo, Benji, Ciaran, and Emmett along with many nieces and nephews.

Born in Hamilton Scotland, Margaret was always proud of her Scottish heritage. She was 3 when her family decided to immigrate to Canada. She has numerous stories about growing up in Toronto and many of her friendships have lasted decades. Margaret was married July 4, 1953, and enjoyed 70 years of marriage with Ron. The happiest of family memories were at their cottage on Eel’s Lake.

Margaret had a natural talent for accounting and finances. She started her career in 1962 at Imperial Oil honing her skills for 11 years before moving on to supervisory positions at Harlequin Enterprises and then Har-Nal which later become division of Tor Star. Margaret was awarded the President’s Award for outstanding achievement and contribution in 1976. Professionally, she was a very active member in numerous national and international credit agencies. In 1984, Margaret was elected as the Creditel representative to the National Association of Credit Managers, Book Publishers Group, New York City.

In 1989, Margaret retired due to medical reasons. But a new chapter of her life unfolded centered around her grandchildren. In 2002, Margaret and Ron relocated to Port Perry, Canterbury Commons and enjoyed another 20 years participating in various community and club events. She enjoyed her time in Port Perry immensely. As her health changed, Margaret always displayed strength, courage, and optimism. By 2022, Margaret and Ron relocated to Taunton Mills in Whitby which allowed them to be closer to their sons in their final years. The family would like to thank the staff of Taunton Mills, Saint Elizabeth Nurses, and the Lakeridge Palliative Care team and unit for their excellent care and compassion.

A Celebration of Margaret and Ron’s life will be held on Friday June 20, 2025, at THORNTON FUNERAL CENTRE (1200 Thornton Road North, Oshawa, 905-579-6787) from 11am – 2pm, with words of Comfort starting at 1:30pm.

There is no night without a dawning

No winter without a spring

And beyond the dark horizon

Our hearts will once more sing…

For those who leave us for a while

Have only gone away

Out of a restless, care worn world

Into a brighter day.
