MAUNDRELL, David Joel Maundrell
Passed away on March 10, 2026, at Rockcliffe Care Community. He was 81 years old.

David was born on July 27, 1944, in Oshawa, Ontario, and was raised in Whitby. He was the oldest of three boys born to Douglas and Inez Maundrell, growing up alongside his brothers Brian and Daniel.

In his youth, David played hockey for many years and developed a strong curiosity about how things worked. That curiosity eventually led him to Ryerson University, where he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering. His career took him across Canada repairing X-ray machines and other hospital equipment, a role that allowed him to combine technical skill with travel and adventure.

David married in Ontario and welcomed two sons, Alexander Maundrell and Brodie Maundrell. Later, David and his family moved to British Columbia.

Those who knew David often remarked on his intelligence and his wide-ranging curiosity about the world.

David was an avid reader throughout his life. His bookshelves were filled with works on philosophy, religion, personal health, and personal growth. But he also enjoyed reading simply for fun, especially mystery novels. He had a particular fondness for a good “whodunnit.”

David later remarried in Toronto and gained a step-daughter, Jennifer Wesley.

Always open to new experiences, David spent a number of years in China teaching English. During his time there, he eventually became the Director of Foreign Teachers at a large school, guiding and supporting educators from around the world.

After retiring, David devoted more of his time to family. He moved back and forth between Ontario and British Columbia so he could spend time with both of his sons and remain close to family.

David was a proud grandfather to Kyle Maundrell, Justin Maundrell, and Carmello Wesley.

David was not widely known for his cooking. In fact, there were several occasions where even he could not eat what he had prepared. When he offered to cook for guests, the usual suggestion was to either go out for dinner or let someone else handle the kitchen. David always laughed about it and admitted they were probably right.

In his youth, he also loved cars and enjoyed driving, often very fast. When driving with his brother Danny, David would ask, “Are you in a hurry or a real hurry?” And then he would make sure they got there in record time. Despite the speed, he was a skilled and controlled driver who could drift around corners and highway on-ramps with impressive confidence.

David lived a life marked by intelligence, curiosity, humor, and adventure. He will be remembered for his love of learning, his stories, and the many experiences he shared with those around him.

He will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
