MCCANN, Michael Edwin McCann

August 31, 1940 - March 27, 2026
MCCANN, Michael Edwin McCann

He has been called home and warmly welcomed by his beloved wife Mary, his parents Harry and Bernadette, and his brothers Jimmy, Patrick, and Tommy. Born in Pembroke on August 31, 1940, Edwin was known for his hockey prowess and his exceptional skill at the pool table, the latter earning him the well-deserved nickname “Fast Eddy.”

Michael Edwin McCann married the love of his life, Mary, on August 20, 1966, and together they built a life full of family, friendship, and adventure. He cherished their 54 years of marriage and carried her memory with him everyday after her passing on June 5, 2021. Graduating from St. Thomas University (BA, 1967) and Queen’s University’s teacher’s college (1968), Edwin would go on to dedicate thirty years to educating the next generation, teaching law, accounting, and co-op at Renfrew Collegiate Institute from 1968 until his retirement in 1998. Edwin was deeply respected by his students and colleagues alike.

An adept card player, Edwin would play bridge with anyone who asked. He and Mary were devoted members of the Renfrew Duplicate Bridge Club, where they were formidable adversaries with each other.Β Always an adventurer, Edwin took up skiing at the age of 38, and for the most practical of reasons, to save on gas. He reasoned that if he was going to make the drive out to Candiac Skiways with his 5 kids in tow, he may as well spend the time on the hill rather than turning straight back for town.A latecomer to golf, he became completely enamoured with the game and spent much of his retirement channelling his frustrations and his elations out on the course alongside his brothers and closest friends.

A man of few words, Edwin was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren, and found great peace in knowing they were all well cared for as he went to his rest at 85 years of age. His legacy lives on through his children MJ, Sean, Maureen (John Nethercott), Patrick (Christina Williams), and Michael (Nancy Fraser), and through his grandchildren Liam, Mikayla, Katie, Rory, Lauren, Brody, Ewan, and Duncan.Β His sister Mary (late Jim Michaud) and brothers Terry (Mary), Andy (Janice), Harry (Caroline), Peter (Nancy), Frank (Judy), and Danny (Ruth) are left to regale Edwin’s children and grandchildren with stories of his youth and the mischief he caused. Though he was more at home among his siblings at any gathering, his many nieces and nephews held him in great affection.

Edwin’s family is grateful to the nursing staff of Renfrew Victoria Hospital and Pembroke Regional Hospital, as well as Drs. Mushtaq and Walia for their dedicated care during his hospital stays in November 2025 and March 2026.Β Please consider giving generously to Renfrew Hospice.
