MCDONALD, Shirley McDonald

We celebrate the life and mourn the passing of Shirley Margaret McDonald, affectionately known to all as Aunt Susie, on September 1, 2025, at her home in her 95th year.

Shirley is survived by her brother Harold and her sisters-in-law Eleanor and Kathleen. She now joins her beloved parents, Ernest and Victoria, and her siblings Ellen, Mary, Ernest, and Ron in eternal rest.

Aunt Susie was a cherished aunt to her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, who adored her generosity and love. She was powerhouse and a trailblazer; Shirley’s entrepreneurial spirit was evident throughout her remarkable life. She first made her mark in the fireworks business—a particular delight to the younger generations, as Aunt Susie always had fireworks on hand to light up special occasions. Later, alongside her business partner David Carr, she founded Futuri Company, where she continued to work passionately well into her 90s. Her products—ranging from pizza props to cutlery packages, wet naps, hairnets and chef hats—were found in restaurants from coast to coast across Canada. Spotting the Futuri logo was always a moment of pride for her family, and she never missed the chance to inspect the quality of takeout cutlery wherever she went.

Aunt Susie’s warmth extended far beyond business. She welcomed not only her family, but also friends, neighbours, and anyone lucky enough to know her, into her heart and her home. Her condo on High Street became a second home for countless nieces and nephews over the years, and her presence was a constant reminder that you could always count on Aunt Susie.

She was tireless in her devotion to family—spending weekends at Ronnie’s cottage, visiting the family farm in Nobleton, weekly trips to Grand Valley, and countless commutes to Malton for work. Her car was often packed with love, and special treats to share, as she made her rounds to stay connected with those she cherished.

In her final days, Aunt Susie wished to remain at home, and the family extends heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and personal support workers who made that possible.

Shirley Margaret “Aunt Susie” McDonald will be remembered for her strength, her generosity, her determination, and above all, her unwavering love for family. She leaves behind a legacy of resilience and devotion that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
