MCKENZIE , Leslie Joseph McKenzie
It is with sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Leslie Joseph McKenzie on July 26, 2025, in Oshawa, at the age of 76.

Born and raised in Nobleton, Ontario, Les grew up alongside his brother, Blaine. While Nobleton was his hometown, a huge part of his heart—and his family’s history—belonged to Manitoulin Island, where he spent countless summers growing up. As a father, Manitoulin became a place of new family memories, where he vacationed with his sons on Lake Manitou at the annual family retreat known affectionately as “Club Les.”

Les built an exciting and successful career in advertising, marketing, and sales within the automotive industry, working with AMC, Jeep, and Nissan, before moving on to Neon Products. In retirement, he continued to pursue the things that brought him joy—most notably, golf and wine!

A proud Canadian and lifelong learner, Les had a deep interest in history and a passion for storytelling. During his time in Shelburne, where he raised his family, he was known to bring levity, fun, and charisma to every gathering. He was a devoted hockey dad, often driving through winter storms to make it to games, balancing long commutes with unwavering support for his sons.

In his later years, Les embraced a quieter, more peaceful life with his beloved partner of over 20 years, Zoya, and her daughters, Iva and Geri, who brought him great joy and companionship.

He is survived by Zoya, Iva (Richard), and Geri, as well as his sons Joe (Gillian), Scott (Jackelyn), and Matt (Sheldon). Les was a proud grandfather to Sierra, Alexandra, Cole, Emily, Ryan, Parker and Charlie.

He is also survived by his brother, Blaine (Carol), and will be fondly remembered by his extended family and many dear friends. Les was predeceased by his parents, Melvin and Frances McKenzie.

He also maintained a close and loving friendship with his wife of 26 years and mother of his three sons, Susan, with whom he shared many wonderful years and adventures.

Les often joked that his tombstone should read: “I’d still rather be here than Winnipeg.” His humor was ever-present, often masking layers of a deeply thoughtful and sometimes complicated man. Though he occasionally struggled to show it, he led with genuine love—in his own way. And if given the chance, we believe he would have expressed that love even more freely. He will be remembered with laughter, affection, and a profound sense of gratitude for both the life he shared with us as well as the lives that he allowed others to build around him.
