MCMASTER, John McMaster

peacefully at Credit Valley Hospital on Monday, October 20, at the age of 92. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Jean, in 2018, after 61 years of marriage. John was a loving father to Alison (Keith) and Ian, and will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Gregory, Lizzy, and Ryan.

John was born on January 1, 1933, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He came to Canada in 1957, where he married Jean and settled in Toronto. It was there that he began his career with Zurich Insurance in 1960. In 1962 they moved to Hamilton, where he worked on the road. In 1971, he moved to Calgary to start a new branch for Zurich, and later returned to Mississauga in 1986 to manage the Yorkdale Branch and, subsequently, the Ontario Regional Branch. He retired in 1994 after 34 years with Zurich.

After retirement, John was involved with various charities, such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society, where, among other duties, he went door to door collecting donations. This was something he really loved doing because it gave him a chance to get to talk to everyone in the neighborhood. John was very social and always loved talking to people. He was also the president of the 25 Year Club at Zurich, where he organized events and worked on their United Way Campaigns.

John was also very involved in the Anglican church whether in Calgary at Saint Cyprian’s, or Saint Peter’s Erindale, where he was a very active member since 1986, although less so in his later years as he was slowing down. He loved being a part of the choir, where he sang bass, and choir parties were always a highlight.

John will be sadly missed, but we will remember the many good times we had together.
