OATES, David Charles Oates
December 31, 1965 - December 9, 2025
I bid farewell to all who have been a part of my journey. I am David Charles Oates or as I’m more commonly known, Bird. Born on December 31, 1965, in Fergus, Ontario, where I remained a proud lifelong resident. I left this world on December 9, 2025, at 59 years of age, with my partner, Christine Dunlop, and our family standing fast by my side.
In my time here, I wore many hats and reached many milestones. Nothing meant more to me than being Christine’s partner, a devoted father to our four children, and Papa to our two grandgirls. My love for my family and friends ran as deep as life itself. I never considered myself above anyone, I simply did my best to lead with empathy and do right by others.
I was determined throughout my life, pushing forward even when the path was steep. That determination carried me through years of learning, working, and earning the degrees that shaped my work, my identity, and my ability to serve others.
Throughout my life, I took on many roles that I was honoured to hold: son and son-in-law, brother and brother-in-law, nephew, uncle, great-uncle, loyal friend, cousin, colleague, teacher, coach, activist, godfather, and namesake.
I spoke up for those who struggled to be heard, stood with the underdog, and offered a helping hand to anyone who needed one – no matter their path or circumstance. Even in the face of adversity, including my long battle with a brain tumour, I held tight to empathy, hope, and a desire to leave the world kinder than I found it.
I know my legacy lives on through the people I love most. Christine, and our extraordinary children – Alix (Shaun), Quynn (Corey), Rainen, and Jake – together with our spirited grandgirls, Scout and Fern, they will continue to carry forward the best parts of me.
I was predeceased by my dear friend and mother-in-law, Mary Dunlop. Beyond my immediate circle, I leave behind a village, including: my loving parents, Fred and Evelyn; my father-in-law and friend, Ian; my beloved siblings and in-laws; all of my relatives, near and far; and my steadfast friends, each of whom held a special place in my heart.
As you mourn my passing, I hope you’ll also celebrate the life I lived: the joys, the fun, the conversations, the friendship, and the countless moments of meaning we shared. I encourage all of you to live authentically, empathically and with strength. Soul Food. Cheers, Bird.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at the Fergus Legion, 500 Blair St., Fergus, Ontario, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Words of Remembrance will be shared at 3:30 p.m. to honour and reflect on a life well lived.
