Patrick Neil McAlister, a long-time resident of Oak Bay, passed away on October 8, 2026. Born in Vancouver in 1950, Patrick was a proud Canadian who pursued continuous learning and professional excellence, graduating as an alumnus of three British Columbia universities.
Patrick is survived by his brother Hylton (Angela), his sister Lorna Kearney (Jack), and his niece Janice Blore, her children, Katie Blore and Daniel Blore (Kiva) and their son, Tatum. He was predeceased by his parents Daniel and Esme McAlister of West Vancouver.
Patrick leaves the following words:
I was honoured to have been born in Canada. Being raised in an exceptional country, supported by nurturing parents, a carefree childhood, excellent schooling, and career opportunities that spanned more than 40 years. I was warmed by many more fires than I lit.
I will miss those mornings watching the sun rise over the Gulf Islands. I will miss my family and friends for the many good times, hearty laughs, and the stories we shared. I will miss travelling, the tug of a Chinook salmon, the aroma of freshly cut cedar and witnessing quiet acts of selflessness, honesty and integrity.
I will not miss our overpopulated planet, where too many of Earth's creatures have been pushed to the brink for slaughter or profit. I will not miss the age of plastic, conspicuous consumption, empty political promises or the never-ending cycles of war and famine.
We must learn to walk more softly upon this planet, to be more charitable to the unfortunate and to respect the many creatures that have a right to share this world without exploitation, pain or suffering. There is enough in the world for everyone's need but not everyone's greed.
Hasta la vista, good friends and family.
