It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Robert (Bob) Schumacher on Monday, October 5, 2026, at Chartwell Bowmanville Creek, at the age of 81. Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that he is now reunited with his beloved wife of 58 years, Pauline (née Oberle) who predeceased him in July 2026.
Bob was born in Walkerton, Ontario on January 2, 1945. He was predeceased by his dear parents Joseph and Dorothy (née Schnurr). A devoted father and grandfather, Bob will be lovingly remembered by his children, Carrie Richardson (Chris), Craig (Jennifer), and Caryn Sabine (Craig), and by his adored grandchildren, Emma, Lila, Danika, Zachary, Reid, and Miller. He is also lovingly remembered by his siblings JoAnne Grubb (Marvin), Cathy Vanderlee (the late Andy), Garry (Judy) and Paul (Nancy) as well as his extended family, friends, and everyone whose lives were touched by Bob’s kindness, generosity and good humour.
A dedicated police officer for over 30 years, Bob began his career with the Bowmanville Police Force in 1970 and continued serving his community with the Durham Regional Police Service following regionalization in 1974. He rose through the ranks during his distinguished career and ultimately served as a Detective with the Criminal Investigation Branch, Major Fraud before retiring in 1998. Bob earned the respect of his colleagues for his wisdom, professionalism, attention to detail, and willingness to support and mentor others. He wore the badge with pride and demonstrated an unwavering commitment to upholding the law, helping those in need, and making a positive difference in the lives of others.
Following his retirement from the police service, Bob enjoyed a rewarding second career with Laidlaw as a school bus driver and driver trainer. The role allowed him to stay connected and to serve his community in a different way. Once fully retired, Bob treasured the winters he spent in Florida with Pauline, making lasting memories and enjoying precious time with family and friends.
A devoted man of deep faith, Bob was a loyal and active parishioner of St. Joseph Parish in Bowmanville, a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 6361 and was a proud Sir Knight. He was deeply committed to parish life, ministry, and numerous charitable causes, always looking for ways to serve and enrich the lives of others.
Although he will be deeply missed, Bob’s legacy lives on through the example he set, the values he instilled and the love he shared so generously with his family, friends, and community.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 16th, 2026 from 2pm-4pm and 6pm-8pm at Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home, 53 Division Street, Bowmanville, Ontario. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, October 17th, 2026 at 11am at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 127 Liberty Street South, Bowmanville, Ontario. A luncheon will follow in the St. Joseph Parish Hall. A private family interment will take place at the Bowmanville Cemetery and Columbarium.
Donations in Bob’s memory may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation Canada, Diabetes Canada, or MS Canada.
Loved beyond words. Missed beyond measure. Forever in our hearts.
