RYAN, Matthew Robert Ryan

Passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 2, 2025 at his home, at the age of 81.

Predeceased by his wife Annette. Loving father of Janice Shemko (Ian) and Robert Ryan (Lucy). Cherished grandfather of Aimee (Jeanne), Stephanie (Keenan), and Annette (Roy) and great-grandfather of Zepplynn, Scarlett, and Logan. Dear brother of Patricia (the late John), the late Mary-Lou (Andy), Charlie (Marie), Cathy (Derek), Ethel (Ed), and Nora (Cyril).

Born in Cape Breton (or as he’d call it, “God’s Country”), Matthew lived a life defined by service to others. After achieving sobriety over 56 years ago, he dedicated his life to supporting those struggling with addiction. He retired from General Motors after many years of service as their Substance Abuse Representative, and was also an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous. He touched countless lives with his guidance, patience, and unwavering commitment.

Matthew will be remembered for his friendly smile, his great sense of humour (and often terrible jokes), his infectious laughter, and the ways he managed to make even complete strangers feel cared for and supported. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 14, 2025 from 4-7 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home (124 King St. E., Oshawa). A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, November 15, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. in the Chapel.
