It is with great love and deep sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Francis Schmaltz, who left us peacefully on December 2, 2025, at the age of 90.
Don was born in Beiseker, Alberta, and grew up alongside his three brothers: Clare (Thelma), Terry (Noni) and Lewis (Alice). Don was also blessed with many nieces and nephews.
He married Evelyn (née Lachelt) and later settled in Penticton, British Columbia. It was in Penticton that he and Evelyn raised their family, and Don had a career in the Automotive industry.
In his later years, Don moved to Kelowna, BC, where he lived on his daughter’s farm – a place he loved deeply.
Don was a caring, kind-hearted man whose warmth, humour, and presence touched everyone who knew him. Throughout his life, he was devoted to his family, his community, and the many passions that brought him joy.
One of Don’s greatest lifelong commitments was to the game of hockey. For decades, he was deeply involved in amateur hockey in British Columbia, serving in numerous leadership and volunteer roles. His dedication earned him significant recognition, including a lifetime membership with the B.C. Amateur Hockey Association, a reflection of more than 20 years of service. He chaired meetings, supported young players, and gave countless hours to building local hockey programs. Don’s contributions became part of the foundation of amateur hockey in his community, and he was honoured by both provincial and national hockey organizations for his dedication and impact.
Later in life, he began flying remote-control airplanes, a hobby that brought him great enjoyment.
Don will be profoundly missed by his wife, Evelyn Schmaltz; his daughter, Lynette Stirling; his son, Pat Schmaltz; his five grandchildren; and his eight great-grandchildren. His family will forever cherish his stories, his laughter, and the countless moments he brightened with his sense of humour.
A celebration of Don’s life will be held in the spring of 2026.
