SCOTT, Guy Duncan Searle Scott

February 4, 1956 - April 15, 2026
SCOTT, Guy Duncan Searle Scott

He was born on February 4, 1956, in Minden, Ontario, the son of Jessie β€œBetty” Beatrice Scott (nee Chalmers) and William β€œBill” C. Scott. He was the fifth generation to call the small village of Kinmount home, a fact he was fiercely proud to let everyone know.

Guy Duncan Searle Scott is the beloved husband of Lori Scott (nee Lyons); cherished father of Meg, Rachel, Justin, Shane, and Alicia (deceased); and dear brother of Laurie Scott. He is pre-deceased by his parents, Betty (nee Chalmers) and Bill Scott.

To the world, Guy Scott is remembered as an historian, an educator, and a local legend.

He authored, co-authored, or supported the creation of almost a dozen heritage pieces from his seminal book, The History of Kinmount: A Community on the Fringe, to the more recent, Where Duty Leads: The 109th Battalion in WWI, and his most recent co-creation of HeritageStories.ca, a local history of the Ottawa-Huron Tract.

Guy was also a pioneer in digital education, serving as a History and Civics Teacher with the Virtual Learning Centre. Here he not only brought history back to life, but he shared the beauty of rural life with children who had never seen a horse before.

His classroom was anywhere a student was willing to learn, be it in the middle of a horse paddock or hunting for ghost towns on his legendary heritage ghost tours.

In Kinmount, Guy was a “local hero” who served on nearly every board and committee. From the Kinmount Gazette to the Railway Station preservation, his commitment was absolute.

His heart, however, belonged to the Kinmount Fair. A two-time Past President and a former Provincial President of the OAAS, Guy saw the Fair as the ultimate celebration of community – much like his father before him.

To his family, Guy was a monument of quiet strength with a quick-witted, albeit dry, sense of humour. He was a wealth of information who communicated in a mix of deep wisdom and random movie quotes. A master storyteller, he was never afraid to tell his favorite tales more than once; though his family knew every punchline, his presence was the steady, humorous heartbeat of their home.

A celebration of Guy’s extraordinary life will be held on May 9th, 2026, at the Kinmount Fairgrounds Arena (FR 374A. County Road 503, Trent Lakes. North entrance) with visitation from 12:00 o’clock noon until the time of the Ceremony at 1:30 pm.

In honour of Guy’s life works, the family requests that you help us celebrate his memory. Please come prepared to the celebration with a written β€˜Guy Story’ or quotation. A memorial box will be at the service to collect these stories, ensuring his legacy is preserved for his family and the town he loved.

Donations may be made in Guy’s honour via e-transfer to the Kinmount Fair (Payments@kinmountfair.net) or the Kinmount District Health Centre (donations@kdhc.ca) and can be arranged through the Gordon A. Monk Funeral Home Ltd., P.O. Box 427, Minden, Ontario K0M 2K0.

As Guy always believed, even a community on the fringe is the center of the universe if you love it enough.
