It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Matilda Jean Slemon, peacefully on June 17, 2025 at Lakeridge Health Oshawa just days before her 99th birthday.
Jean is predeceased by her parents, Fred and Tillie (Taylor) Toms, sister Ruby (Toms) Trewin and dear husband Lloyd. Jean is survived by her children Susan Shrigley (Todd), Fred Slemon (Julie), grandchildren Andrew Shrigley (Kaitlynn), Scott Shrigley (Sarah), McKenna and Mollie Slemon and great grandchildren Boden and Noah. She was adored by her many nieces and nephews.
She was a life long member of the United Church, UCW, Women’s Institute, Club 21 and was awarded the first Provincial Honours
for 4-H homemaking.
She spent her life brightening the days of family, friends, neighbours and her community. In her younger years she loved to garden, bake, sew, and decorate. She was known far and wide for her legendary butter tarts. Jean could often be found dropping in with food or flowers to cheer someone or helping at a community event. You may have lost a game of euchre to her, something she enjoyed until recently.
Special thanks to the staff and residents of Cedarcroft Place for their care and companionship over the past 3 years. They are already missing her sweet smile.Opportunities to celebrate Jean’s life are as follows:Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home, Bowmanville.
