SMIT, Saakje “Sandra” (Dykstra) Smit

On Thursday, November 7, 2024, at Markham-Stouffville Hospital, the Lord called Sandra Smit home at the age of 85. Beloved wife of the late Gerrit Smit (May 3, 2009). Loving mother of Ron & Laurie, Linda, John, Charlene & Jake, Rose & Rob, Carol & John, and Irene & Craig. Cherished Grandma to 20 grandchildren and Great-Grandma to 39, soon to be 40, great-grandchildren, each one loved dearly and a source of immense pride and joy.

Sandra was born in Bollingawier, Fryslan, and immigrated to Canada in 1953 with her family. She met her husband Gerrit on a tobacco farm in Drumbo, Ontario, and they married on September 26, 1958. Sandra embraced her roles as a mother and homemaker, dedicating her life to her family with a joyful heart. Her kitchen was filled with the aroma of home-cooked meals, and her hands were never idle as she sewed, knitted, and cared for her children with love.

Known as the β€œBaby Whisperer,” Sandra delighted in welcoming each grandchild and great-grandchild, her lap always ready for a cuddle, her arms open wide. Her love extended to annual family gatherings and the cherished Smit camping weekends, where she created unforgettable memories with her loved ones.

A memorial service will be held at Low and Low Funeral Home, 23 Main Street South, Uxbridge, on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at 11:00 am, followed by a celebration of Sandra’s life. Memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
