SPIES, Klaus Fritz Spies

Passed away on July 6, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born on May 6, 1937, in Bochum, Germany, Klaus was the son of Lili and Walter Spies. Klaus Fritz Spies came to Canada in 1960 and, with the support of his wife Claire (d. 2018), built a long and respected career as a banker in Montreal, Germany, and later Toronto. With a lifelong interest in history and a voracious reader, Klaus carried an extraordinary memory for the details of his life and travels. Fiercely independent, his stories, love of tradition, steady practicality and common sense were constants for all of us. We miss him already. He is survived by his children, Isabelle (Peter) and Eric (Aruna), and by the grandchildren he was so proud of — Eric, Ryan, and Sophie.
