It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Stavros Angelis on August 12, surrounded by his loving wife, cherished children, grandchildren, and family members.
Stavros was born on September 14, 1939, in the beautiful town of Zodhia, Cyprus. He spent his childhood days alongside his four siblings before meeting the love of his life, his wife, Theognosia. In 1974, following the Turkish invasion, Stavros, his wife and their two young daughters were forced to flee as refugees. Arriving in a new land with heavy hearts, they lost every hard-earned possession—yet never their faith, culture, or values. Through sheer grit, tireless work, and devotion to one another, Stavros and Theognosia rebuilt their lives from nothing, creating a sanctuary of safety, tradition, and boundless love for their family.
Stavros was a man of steadfast strength, deep integrity, and boundless warmth. At the very heart of his world was his wife. His greatest desire was simply to be by her side, sharing quiet moments, mutual support, and a devotion that served as the anchor for their entire family. Together, they raised three wonderful daughters—Myroulla, Andromachi, and Haroulla—while pouring their hearts into helping raise all 13 of their grandchildren, who were and still are their ultimate pride, joy, and legacy.
Stavros loved nothing more than tending to his garden, sitting peacefully on his veranda, or enjoying a fresh cup of coffee. Oftentimes, he could be found spending his evenings watching Greek shows and reading books. He took great pride in his winemaking, constantly striving to make each year’s batch better than the last, and was always eager to pour a glass of his homemade wine for visitors.
Family gatherings were where Stavros truly shone. He was the unquestioned star chef at every celebration, masterfully preparing souvlakia, sheftalies, and souvla over the coals while surrounded by the laughter of his loved ones. In his spare time, he could often be found playing competitive games of tavli, cards, or dominoes with his wife, family, friends, and sharing story after story with his grandchildren. A man of quiet faith and deep community spirit, Stavros loved attending church and took immense pride in being the first to help any neighbour in need—whether planting their crops, pruning and grafting their trees, landscaping or walking their dogs.
Stavros will be remembered by all who knew him for his welcoming smile, his generous soul, his resilient spirit, his infectious warmth, and the selfless love he gave to his family. Though our hearts are heavy with his loss, the traditions he passed down, the family he nurtured, and the love he showed us will live on forever.
