Gary Irvin Stere (aka Moose) passed away peacefully at his home in Newcastle on Sunday, June 29, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family and friends. He was 80 years old.

Gary was predeceased by his cherished wife, Jean Mabel Stere; his loving daughters, Sherry Ann and Angela Jeanette; parents Irvin and Lucinda (Albrecht) Stere, and Alvin and Laura Schmidt; his siblings Wayne Stere, Claire and Rose (White) Stere, Marjorie (Marj) and Jim Kalbfleisch, Robert (Bob) and Betty (Schmidt) Stere, Brenda Stere (who passed in infancy); and brothers-in-law Harvey Harold, Don Schmidt, and Kenneth Schmidt.

He leaves behind his loved grandchildren, Jamie Stiles, Ryan Stiles, Chelsea Thompkins, and Courtney Thompkins, as well as his treasured great-granddaughter, Charlie Ann Stiles; his son-in-law, Bob Stiles; his sisters-in-law, Jeanne (Habel) Stere and Mary Ann (Schmidt) Harold.

Gary was deeply loved by his many nieces and nephews, cousins, and his rent-a-daughters, and will be fondly remembered by his large extended family and wide circle of friends. His kindness, humour, and generosity left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Gary was a devoted individual whose dedication extended not only to his loving family and friends but also to his career as a Dispatch Supervisor at Hutton Transport in Newcastle, where he worked for 34 years. Gary volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Community Care as a way to support the community. Gary’s passion for golf was evident in the fact that he played almost daily for over 60 years. He also cherished time spent fishing and playing cards, activities he enjoyed and shared with many family members and friends throughout his life.

Gary will be welcomed with open arms by those who have gone before him, and no doubt, the cards will be shuffled and waiting, ready for him to deal the first hand. May his first and final card game with those he holds dear end with a well-earned LARGE check mark.

Visitation will be held at Newcastle Funeral Home, 386 Mill St. S., Newcastle, on Friday, July 4, 2025, from 2:00–4:00 p.m., and on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Newcastle United Church, 84 Mill St. S., Newcastle, from 10:00–11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Bowmanville Cemetery.
