Susan Fox Stevenson was as much a product of the North as the gold veins that ran through the rock near her hometown of Swastika, Ontario. Born into a log cabin, she grew up in humble beginnings and later excelled in academics, becoming a teacher at Toronto Western Hospital’s Atkinson School of Nursing.
A chance encounter with Bob Stevenson at a dance changed her life forever—they married in 1965 and raised two daughters, Catherine Anne and Gwen. The family moved to Waterford in 1968, where Susan became a cornerstone of the Waterford United Church community, serving in numerous roles, including President of the Erie Presbytery UCW.
She co-founded the Waterford Food Cupboard and the church’s ‘Moms & Tots’ program. Her dedication to community service was recognized by HN-REACH for over 40 years of work with mothers and children. Her commitment extended globally, supporting causes such as refugee sponsorship and environmental conservation.
Susan passed away peacefully at Norview Lodge, remembered for her grace, intellect, and tireless compassion. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Bob Stevenson, daughters Catherine Anne (Clayton) and Gwen, grandchildren Lukas and Owen, and many nieces, nephews, and her god-daughter Carol Scovil. She was predeceased by her brothers, Robert Fox and David Fox.
Visitation will take place on Friday, May 30, from 6 – 8 pm at Thompson-Mott Funeral Home, 62 Main St N, Waterford. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 31, at 11:00 am at Waterford United Church, 135 Main St S.
As per Susan’s wishes, donations may be made to the Waterford United Church Mission and Service Fund in lieu of flowers.
