SUPPIAH, Meenatchy Suppiah

We are saddened to announce the passing of Meenatchy (Letchumi) Suppiah on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. She is predeceased by her husband Manickam Suppiah and granddaughter Niroshini, and she will be missed by her children, Daya, Vasu, Tabo, Mathi, Ravi, and Siva, her daughter-in-laws, Vadhini, Anbarasi, Kavitha, Aarthi, and her grandchildren, Suda, Vino, Akilesh, Anika, Shania, Nitheesh, Anish, Ashmita, Nehan, Naythra, and Aadesh.

Only legally known by Meenatchy because of a mix up when registering her birth, Letchumi was born in Nawalapitiya, Sri Lanka in 1937. The daughter of a textile trader and restaurateur, Letchumi was married at 16 and had 6 children within 15 years. As she did not have the opportunity to continue with her schooling, Letchumi committed her life to taking care of her family and making sure everyone was well fed.

In many ways, cooking was her life. When she wasn’t in the kitchen, she would spend the day going back and forth from local grocery stores to get exactly what she needed. One summer, she managed to sign up for her own library card to get recipe books on bread making. In her later years when it became harder for her to leave the house, she started relying on YouTube to learn about the latest recipes, sometimes staying up until 3 in the morning to watch her videos. When she became reliant on her sons to go to the store for her, she was always specific about what she wanted, and was not one to settle for less.

Besides cooking, one could say her other love was socializing. Letchumi was incredibly curious about other people, and it would only take her 5 minutes to learn someone’s name, their parents’ name, their birthplace, their job, and what they ate for lunch. She was never shy about making friends with people she encountered, and she rarely forgot a face.

She also loved to travel and see new places when she had the opportunity, often asking to be taken to unconventional destinations just because she heard someone else had travelled there.

Letchumi’s funeral service will be taking place on:
