Passed away peacefully on September 2, 2026 at the age of 88 years. Thomas Martin Ryan enjoyed a large extended family and leaves behind his nieces and nephew and their families; Linda in England, Nancy, Angela, Maria and Tony in the USA, Cathy in Australia, Debbie, Barbara, Paula, Pat, Pauline, and Christine in Ontario. He will be missed by his cousins in Ireland and the USA. Tom was predeceased by his parents, Kitty (Brennan) and Michael Ryan of Toronto, his siblings, Jack, Bridie (Pat), Patrick, Mike and Maura; and his nephews Mick, John and Peter.
Tom was born in Mungret, Co. Limerick, Ireland, the sixth child of Kitty and Mick Ryan. He grew up in Wealdstone in north west London, England and came to Canada with his parents and some of his siblings in 1953. A confirmed bachelor, he lived in Toronto for most of his life, graduating from George Brown College and then working for the City of Toronto for many years. His hobbies were many and varied: sailing, photography, travelling, genealogy, computing, among others. A truly lovable eccentric – Uncle Tom never failed to confuse us, raise our ire or make us laugh and occasionally, all at the same time!
Tom’s family would like to thank his nieces Patricia Ferrari and Barbara McHughan for their extra-special support and care of Tom over the last years of his life. Many thanks to the staff of the Lakeridge Heights Retirement Community, especially the Fourth Floor nurses and PSW Zeke, for their dedicated and compassionate care of Tom in his last years.
At Tom’s request there will be no visitation. A funeral Mass will be held for family and friends at St. Mary Immaculate Roman Catholic Church, 10295 Yonge St., Richmond Hill, on Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at 10:30. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 8361 Yonge St., Thornhill.
If desired, donations can be made to Parkinson’s Society or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
