Kris Tobias

1968 – 2024

On Saturday, November 30th, 2024, Kris Tobias was unexpectedly and tragically taken from us at the age of 56 while riding his bike in Durham Forest on the trails he had loved for over 30 years. Kris was a beloved husband to Sulyn for 29 years, a devoted father to Isabel, Johan, and Logan, and a loving brother to Kirk (Paula). He was a cherished friend, mentor, and inspiration to many.

A leader and enthusiast of life, Kris was passionate about cycling, cars, music, and forging personal connections. He was a first-generation Canadian, raised by Jewish immigrant parents from Brooklyn, NY. Kris’s professional journey was as remarkable as his character, earning his BBA and MBA from Schulich School of Business and excelling in the telecom industry. In 2002, Kris co-founded “Ride for Karen,” raising $2.7 million for children with cancer in honor of his late mother.

Kris will be profoundly missed. Friends and family will be received at the Dixon-Garland Funeral Home, 166 Main Street Markham North, on Thursday, December 12th, from 1-3 pm and 6-9 pm. A Celebration of Life service will take place on Friday, in the Chapel at 1:00 pm with a reception to follow.

In honor of Kris, donations can be made to the Durham Mountain Biking Association, where a segregated Memorial Fund is being created in his name. The fund will focus on improving safety, accessibility, and emergency preparedness within the trail networks in Durham and York Regions.
