William “Bill” Abetkoff Obituary

William “Bill” Abetkoff passed away on September 1, 2026, at the age of 79.

Born in Saskatchewan on January 18, 1947, Bill remained proud of his Saskatchewan roots. He grew up on a farm, rode his horse to school, and developed a lasting appreciation for nature and the outdoors. He spent many of his younger years in Kelowna and enjoyed summers at Madge Lake in Saskatchewan. In 1989, he and his partner, Aleta Ferguson, made Kelowna their home.

Bill worked for a time as a train brakeman, beginning a lifelong fascination with trains that later found expression in the miniature trains, buildings, and models he built. He also enjoyed fishing, photography, mushroom hunting, collecting, good food, and cooking borscht. Animals held a special place in his life, including his dog Echo.

Bill is survived by Aleta, his partner of 47 years; children Shelley (Ian) Greatbanks, Jason Abetkoff, and Melanie (Armin) Niazi; stepchildren Tracy (David) Robertson, Holly (Corry) Ferguson, and Chad Ferguson; grandchildren Tessa (Vanessa), Amanda, Megan, Nasiem, Jordan (Ashlee), Jacob (Alycia), Samuel (Ayesha), Zac (Kenzie), Alex, and Eric; and many great-grandchildren. He is also remembered by his brother-in-law James “Jim” Ferguson, niece Nicole Ferguson, and grandnieces Catherine, Elizabeth, Sophie, and Emily.

He was predeceased by his parents, Pearl and William Abetkoff; brother Paul Obetkoff; sister-in-law Hazel Obetkoff; and stepson Michael Ferguson.

Bill will be remembered for his optimism, patience, generous spirit, devotion to family, and enthusiasm for life.
