Fredrick "Fred" Donald Runge

1951 - 2024

It is with very heavy hearts that Fredrick "Fred" Donald Runge's family announces his peaceful passing, surrounded by the love of his family, on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at the age of 73.

Fred was the devoted husband of Barbara Smith for 45 wonderful years and the loving father of Graham and Alec (Richelle d’Entremont). He was a proud Grandpa to Hudson, Maxwell, and George. Predeceased by his parents Donald and Patricia (née Dennis) Runge, Fred is survived by his siblings Judy Biggs, Dennis (Hazel), Susan (Peter Dowler), and Donnie (Donna Harris), as well as a sister-in-law, a brother-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Fred was the fourth of five children. Although he earned a BES Honours in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Waterloo, he chose to follow his father's path in the print industry. In 1978, at just 27, Fred accepted the role of heading The Renfrew Mercury. His charismatic leadership and innovative vision modernized the business, shepherding it into the digital age and earning it numerous accolades. Even after retiring in 2007, Fred maintained his love for the tactile charm of an old-school newspaper.

Fred embraced retirement with zeal, dedicating his days to skiing, golfing, and spending time at the cottage. He cherished moments shared with family and friends over cold beers during après-skis or a glass of wine on warm summer nights. He found his greatest peace watching the sunrise over the lake with a cup of coffee in hand.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at Renfrew Victoria Hospital and Hospice Renfrew. Special thanks are given to Fred’s niece, Jennifer Biggs, for her care and support during his illness.

Private family services will be held at the Goulet Funeral Home. In Fred’s memory, donations to Hospice Renfrew would be greatly appreciated.

Fred will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
