MCGILL, Chester Llewellyn  -  The sun rose on August 13th, 1939, in the small town of New Albany, Nova Scotia, when Chester Llewelyn McGill was brought into the world. The loving son of Theodore and Stella, and a brother to Effie (Merle), Florence (John), Kenneth (Liz), Richard and Carolyn (Garnet).

Chester was a loving husband to Stella, father to his children, Debbie (Ron), Nancy (Kevin), and Sue, and step-son Wade (Hildegard) and a caring grandfather to Kayla (Will), Nicholas (Jessica), Rebecca (Ryan), Kourtney (Chris) and Joel.

He was the uncle to many and a friend to anyone he met. The sun set on his life on March 8th, 2019, in Newmarket, Ontario, where he passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family.

He will be remembered for his ability to make even the smallest things seem important.  Regardless if you were telling him about a new job, a big family milestone, or something as simple as the weather back home, he would light up and make you feel like you were the most important person in the world.

We will always remember Chester for his love of music, the outdoors and cross-country travels. Whether it was sitting on the lake fishing, walking through the conservation area near his house, or perched in a blind waiting for a moose to stroll by, he was at his absolute happiest in the great outdoors. Some of our greatest memories as a family were from time spent in his backyard, watching the birds and the squirrels, taking in the beauty of nature. If there ever was a man who personified all of the positive qualities of the East Coast, it was Chester. There was a certain boyish charm about him, always laid-back with a smile on his face (unless you asked him to pose for a picture). He was never too busy for anyone, and he made sure that anyone who came by the house was welcomed with open arms. He was never in a hurry and enjoyed many an afternoon on his porch, chatting with his cherished friends and family.

Always outnumbered by women in his house, there was nobody that Dad loved more than his girls.  Whether it was hunting for the perfect Christmas tree with Deb, showing Nancy how to wire a light or use a new tool, or debating business and politics with Sue, Dad loved all the time he spent with his daughters. There was another special woman in Chester’s life, his wife and travel partner, Stella. They were always embarking on cross-country travels with Chester at the wheel and Stella navigating (hitting every Canadian province and territory, plus 49 states along the way!) where they created memories to last a lifetime. Even though his girls played a central role in his life, Chester shared a close connection and bond with his son-in-laws Ron and Kevin.

There was a special bond between Grampie and his grandchildren. Whether watching Nick and Kourtney’s hockey games throughout the years or baiting a hook with Kayla and Becca on camping trips, there was never a doubt in anyone’s mind how much love he had for them and how much they admired him. The way he would light up when they walked through the door, with his trademark smile and exclamation of 'who do we have here!?' is something that will be remembered forever.

While our hearts are filled with sadness, we remember all of the amazing things about such a wonderful man. He was kind, loving and compassionate and had the biggest heart of anyone you could meet. The love and the laughter that always filled the room when he was present will be remembered and cherished by everyone who knew him. We hope there are plenty of moose in the forest and fish in the lake in heaven. Love you forever.

Memorial Visitation will be held at Taylor Funeral Home, 524 Davis Drive, Newmarket, On, on Wednesday, March 13th, from 1pm to 2pm, followed by Memorial Service at 2pm, and Reception at 3pm.
