MacKendrick JoanMacKENDRICK, Joan Catherine (nee RUSH)   - January 17, 1929 - May 7, 2021

Joan passed away peacefully with family by her side at Markhaven Long Term Care in Markham on May 7, 2021 at age 92.

Born in Toronto January 17, 1929, Joan grew up in the Scarborough community of Birchcliff.

After graduating from Women's College Hospital in 1951, she pursued a career in nursing prior to marrying Gordon MacKendrick in 1952, and on an occasional basis afterward.

Joan returned to work as a counsellor for Family Service Association from 1967 until her retirement in 1995.

As a mother, she adhered to the "free-range" school of parenting, allowing her children to be independent and make their own decisions, free of conventional expectations.

She was a devoted grandmother and at age 90 took delight in meeting her great-granddaughter. Daughter of James Nelson Rush and Ruth O'Connor Rush (Burritt), Joan is survived by daughter Stephanie (Gordon Donley), sons Michael (Kelly) and Ian; grandsons Ian Donley (Monica), Brian Donley (Frannie), Andrew MacKendrick (Eric), Cameron MacKendrick (David) and Douglas MacKendrick (Michelle); and great-granddaughter Charlotte Donley.

She was predeceased by her sister Mary Surtees (2011) and eldest son Peter (2012).

Heartfelt thanks to Markhaven LTC for the tremendous support and care they gave Joan over the last two years.

A celebration of Joan's life will be held later this year when gatherings are possible.
