Proulx BettyPROULX, Bridget 'Betty' Teresa - It is with heavy hearts my sister and I announce the passing of Betty, our loving mother, on January 6, 2021.

Mom was born in Dublin, Ireland on May 26th, 1941, and as a young girl of 12, came to Canada by sea with her mother and four sisters, landing in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The family joined her stepfather and brother in Toronto, living on Sammon Ave.

She met and married our handsome father, Egart “Ed” Friedrich in 1960, and I came along in 1962 and my sister in 1963. She helped our father build his glass and mirror business, doing his bookkeeping and manning the shop on Sheppard Ave. in Agincourt. They parted ways in the 80’s, remaining friends.

In 2005 she married Ken Proulx, another handsome fellow, who bent to Mom’s every wish, and treated my sister and I as his own.

Our mother was proud to have been a member of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Auxiliary, participating in police activities such as missing person searches, parades, and one of her happiest tasks, working behind the scene for the Police Christmas toy drive for years.

Mom’s greatest joy was her two grandsons. When they were young, they would spend a week in the summer at Camp Nana, where she would serve them popcorn and licorice for one day’s breakfast!

Betty was hard working all her life, never one to say 'I can’t do that,' taking things head on, something she passed onto her daughters. Mom was a talented, creative person, which shone through in her sewing and quilting.

In 2012, Mom was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment, declining through the years with dementia.  Unless you knew Mom before this illness, you cannot understand how truly sad it is.

Left behind with wonderful memories are myself, Carolyn Friedrich and husband Murray Williams, and my sister Sandy Friedrich and her husband Jim Dunn. Mom was the proud, loving Nana to Sandy and Jim’s boys, Keenan and Devin Dunn.

She was predeceased by her husband Ken (2014) and our father Ed (2017), as well as her brother Joe, and sisters Sally and Dolores.  She will be greatly missed by her sisters Marie Heron (Alex) and Mae Nash, and friends Trudy McDonald, Marilyn More and Sylvia Neznik.

Our family would like to thank Lynn Jennings and her staff at the Donway East for the exemplary care they extended to our mother over the last years.

If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Toronto.

Arrangements entrusted with Ogden funeral home, Scarborough.
