Chiu AlexCHIU, Alejandro “Alex” - It is with great sadness that Alicia and Cherrie-Marie announce the passing of their beloved husband and father. Alejandro “Alex” Chiu said his last goodnight and fell asleep in his home with his wife and daughter by his side on May 19, 2021.

Born in Candaba, Philippines on November 21, 1938, Alex was the second of six siblings. He was first to leave the coup, moving to Des Moines, Iowa to study computer science.

Alex quickly learned that Chicago would be a more exciting place to live and moved there shortly after.

There he met young Alicia de las Alas and never let her out of his sights. Alex and Alicia married in 1972 and moved to Toronto, Canada.

Alex was proud father to Cherrie-Marie and Christopher.

Alex was entrepreneurial from the start. His parents owned a Chinese restaurant in Manila and had little money for extras.

Alex’s thirty-three years on Markham Council are highlighted in the friendships he developed with his colleagues and the people he met in the community.

In addition to helping others, Alex was a fond cook and gardener.

As the saying goes, behind every great man, is a strong woman. In Alex’s case, there was more than one. Alex had three great assistants during his time at the City of Markham, Cynthia, Candy and Renee. At home, we all know it was Alicia who was his driving force and backbone. Alex’s time here has adjourned, and Alicia and Cherrie look forward to continuing to keep Alex’s vision of helping the community alive.

Alex is survived by his wife Alicia, daughter Cherrie (Sean), his 3 sisters Teresita (Peter), Carmen and Miling, his brother Pedro (Hedy), 24 nieces and nephews, 13 grand nieces and nephews, and his beloved grand dog Griffey.

Alex has been reunited with his son Christopher, his parents, in-laws, and his brother Jose and Jose’s wife Juanita.

After losing their son to ALS, the family has vowed to make ALS history so that the disease no longer devastates others. In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated to ALS Double Play. https://bit.ly/makeALShistory.
