Raymond Albert Waechter passed away peacefully on Friday, March 13, 2026, at the age of 76. Ray was born on April 13, 1949, in Walkerton, Ontario.
Ray was the beloved husband of Anita for over 44 years. He was the proud father of Laurie Wang (Tony Wang) of Bradford, Stephanie Waechter (Derek Napoli) of Hamilton, and Daniel Waechter (Dianne Waechter) of Port Elgin. He was also the proud grandfather of Hannah and Charlie Wang, Dominic and Joshua Napoli, and James, Alexander, and Ethan Waechter.
Ray is survived by his siblings Ken (Marg), Dianne (Bob), and Dave (Darlene), as well as many nieces, nephews and their children. He will also be missed by his in-laws and the whole Zettler family. He was predeceased by his parents, Norma and Harry, his sister Marlene, his brothers Doug and Bruce (Barb), and his nephew Pedro.
Ray was raised on a farm outside of Walkerton. In his youth, he spent time skating on outdoor rinks, helping on the family farm, and helping his dad with milk truck runs. On the farm, he learned the value of hard work: a value he practiced throughout his life. He also played baseball and basketball while growing up. In high school, Ray started playing bass guitar in a band.
After high school, Ray joined his brothers Doug and Ken at the University of Waterloo, where he studied Mathematics. He always credited his brothers for helping him make it through his university years. He came back home on weekends to work on the family farm. In the summers, he worked painting barns with his brother, Ken.
After earning a Bachelor of Mathematics degree from the University of Waterloo (1972) and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Western Ontario (1973), Ray spent 32 years teaching math at Sacred Heart High School in Walkerton. He was a quiet, fair, caring and easygoing teacher who was known for his unique sense of humour and unconventional “bonus questions” on tests. Ray spent his lunch for many years supervising the gymnasium and exercise equipment for students. Over the years as a teacher, Ray also coached boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. Ray is credited with helping to create and organize the Centennial Basketball Tournament at the school, which began in 1979 and ran for many years with the support of the local community. Ray continued to play bass guitar in a rock and roll band, and then a country and western band during university and afterwards.
Ray and Anita raised their children on a farm just outside of Walkerton. He farmed crops and beef cattle for over 40 years and was active on the farm into his final years. Ray also owned and operated a construction and barn painting business with his brother Dave, and later a painting business on his own. His family remembers many drives through the countryside with Ray telling stories and pointing at the barns he had painted.
Ray enjoyed traveling, including trips to Peru to visit his siblings; several trips with good friend Father Dennis Noon (including Europe and Alaska); and trips with family to Florida, France, Italy, and Jamaica.
He was a fan of the Toronto Raptors and Toronto Blue Jays and enjoyed watching games with his family. In his later years, he enjoyed weekly card games with his siblings and breakfast outings with a group of retired teachers.
Friends and relatives are invited to memorial visitation from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at Cameron’s in Walkerton. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at Sacred Heart Church, Walkerton. Fr. Leszek Szczygiel presiding. Reception to follow in the Sacred Heart Parish Hall.
