He was born on November 14, 1936, in Balk, Netherlands, to Sietse and Elizabeth Vanderwerf. He passed away peacefully, with Alma at his side, on February 13, 2026, at Cottonwoods Care Centre in Kelowna, at the age of 89.
Jeff lived a life defined by courage, opportunity, and an unwavering handshake.
Predeceased by his parents, his brother Fred (d. 2023), and his sisters Willy (d. 2024) and Seipi (d. 2025), Jeff carried his Dutch roots proudly throughout his life.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Alma; his son, Don; his daughter, Veronica Scarpino (Carmelo); and his stepchildren Debra Harding (Dennis), Dale Gruber (Lorraine), and Dirk Gruber. Jeff was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He will also be missed by numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews who all held him in the highest regard.
Trained as a painter in the Netherlands, Jeff immigrated to Canada in 1957 with determination and a strong work ethic. He and his brother painted their way across British Columbia, building not just a livelihood but a future. His entrepreneurial spirit soon led him into business ownership, including Valley Lanes bowling alley and the Corner Pin Inn in Rutland, along with many other ventures over the years. Jeff believed deeply in honesty and integrity. His word was solid, and a handshake from Jeff was as good as gold.
Retirement simply opened new adventures. Jeff and Alma embraced life on the road in their fifth wheel, wintering in Mexico, golfing and travelling across Canada, and visiting family in Holland. Before illness slowed him down, you could find Jeff on the ski slopes, out on the golf course, or enjoying a good book.
Jeff and Alma lived in more homes than anyone could easily count — something family loved to tease them about — but every home shared one constant: an open door. Family and friends were always welcome for cards, conversation, and good home cooking. Hospitality came naturally to Jeff, and so did generosity.
Alma and the family extend heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at Cottonwoods Care Centre in Kelowna for their care and dedication in keeping Jeff comfortable.
Jeff did not want a big fuss. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date, likely when the tulips are blooming — a fitting tribute to his Dutch roots and love of simple, meaningful gatherings…But until then, in honouring Jeff, offer a firm handshake, keep your word, open your door to someone in need, and perhaps enjoy a good glass of wine — he would have appreciated that very much.
