Peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, Joseph Toplak passed away on December 14, 2025, at Country Terrace in Komoka, in his 86th year.
Joseph was born on March 18, 1940, in Dobrovnik, former Yugoslavia (now Slovenia). In 1960, with courage, determination, and hope for a better future, he immigrated to Canada. He first arrived in Edmonton, Alberta, before settling in Mt. Brydges, where he lived and worked with his great aunt and her family. Joseph began his working life on local tobacco farms, eventually realizing his dream of owning land of his own. A proud farmer for many years, he grew tobacco before transitioning to cash crops including corn, soybeans, and wheat, and he also dabbled in beef cattle. To support his family and farm, Joseph worked in local factories, never shying away from hard work.
In 1970, Joseph returned to his home village to visit his parents, where he met Veronika Feher, known to all as Vera. She later joined him in Canada, and together they built a life rooted in love, dedication, and perseverance. Joseph and Vera shared 55 years of marriage, a partnership marked by devotion and deep mutual respect.
Joseph was a loving and proud father to Maggie and Tim. He was a cherished father-in-law to Paul, and a devoted grandfather to Stephen and Andrew, who brought him immense pride and joy. Joseph was predeceased by his beloved brother Frank in 2012, his only sibling.
Education was deeply important to Joseph. As an immigrant who built his life from the ground up, he strongly encouraged his children and grandchildren to pursue learning, believing that education was something no one could ever take away. His life story was one of inspiration and hope—proof that with hard work, resilience, and integrity, it is possible to start anew and create a meaningful life. Above all, Joseph cared deeply for his family, always wanting the very best for them. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a loyal friend—someone you could always count on when help was needed.
Joseph took great pride in his homemade wine, which he was always happy to share with visitors, along with his many interesting stories. He was a faithful member of All Saints Parish, where he loved attending Mass, and he was also an enthusiastic soccer fan, following the sport with passion. Joseph was also very proud of his Hungarian heritage.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful staff at Country Terrace, Komoka, for their compassionate care and kindness shown to Joseph.
Joseph will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held at All Saints Catholic Church on Friday, December 19, 2025, from 10am until the time of Mass at 11am. A private family interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery. Guests are invited to the All Saints Parish Hall immediately after Mass for a luncheon.
