BURKE, Captain Richard Burke

With heartfelt sadness, we announce the passing of Captain Richard Burke, 78, a respected aviator, mentor, and devoted family man, on March 10, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Rockland, Ontario, and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Richard discovered his love for the skies at an early age. His life would later take him across several parts of Canada, including Montreal, Quebec, and Medicine Hat, Alberta, before he made Mississauga, Ontario, his home for more than 40 years.

What began as a childhood fascination with airplanes grew into a remarkable career spanning decades in aviation. As a senior pilot and flight instructor with Air Canada, he carried thousands of passengers safely across continents, earning admiration from colleagues and students alike for his steady leadership, calm professionalism, and deep commitment to safety.

Captain Burke was more than a pilot – he was a mentor to many aviators and a trusted guide to colleagues, generously sharing his knowledge and experience. Many later reflected that his guidance and mentorship played an important role in supporting their careers. The sky was not only his workplace but his passion, and he often spoke of the privilege of witnessing sunrises above the clouds.

Beyond aviation, Richard was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and loyal friend. He was married for 54 years to his beloved wife, Dianne Burke (née Burdeyny). He was a devoted father to Ruth, Kerry, and Amanda, and a proud grandfather to Latisha, Tanika, and Keaton. He is also survived by his brother, Karl Burke, and his family in Brandon, Manitoba, as well as his nephew, Terry, who was like a son to Richard and a steadfast presence in the lives of Richard, Dianne, and their daughters.

Richard was known for his kindness, sense of humour, and willingness to help others. An avid cross-country runner in his younger years, he carried that same determination throughout his life. He loved spending time at the beach, especially along the shores of Lake Huron. Whether offering practical advice, lending his skills, or simply stepping in when someone needed a hand, he brought warmth, laughter, and reassurance to everyone around him.

Captain Burke leaves behind a legacy of courage, discipline, and compassion. Though his final flight has taken him beyond our sight, his spirit will forever soar in the skies he loved so deeply.

The family would also like to extend their sincere gratitude to the compassionate healthcare teams at Credit Valley Hospital and Ian Anderson House Hospice for the care and support they provided to Richard and his family.

A Celebtration of Life will be taking place in honor of Capt. Richard Burke
