HEWITT, William Hewitt
July 8, 1937 - July 10, 2026
To know William Hewitt was to know a kind, considerate and thoughtful gentleman. And lucky us, as we were especially blessed to call him our father.
Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Bill passed away on July 10th, 2026, only days after his 89th birthday.
He is now reunited with his beloved wife of 60 years, Irene, who passed away in 2019, and we are sure she is asking him, “what took you so long”?
A skilled and dedicated electrician, Bill was a long-time employee of the City of Ottawa, retiring in 2002. A humble man, he took massive pride in his work, especially at Lansdowne Park where he received many, well deserved accolades throughout his career.
He loved his family, his work, his pool and his darts, leaving many to marvel at not only his skills but his ability to tell you what you needed to hit in order to “double out” before your dart even hit the board. Bill perfected these skills at the Royal Canadian Legion, BR 480, where he was a proud Lifetime Member. We will set a date in the future to gather there to celebrate and remember him.
Bill leaves behind his sister Irene in Belfast; his daughter Allyson (Dean), sons William (Lynne) and Michael (Colleen) and his grandchildren Bayley (Kristen); Derek,Β KeeganΒ and Faith; Tyler (Holly), Owen (Kadey)Β and Finn; and great grandson Seamus. He is also predeceased by his belovedΒ granddaughterΒ Sydney.
The family is eternally grateful for the loving care dad received in recent years as he struggled with advanced dementia.Β We appreciate all the staff that supported him but in particular everyone in the geriatric psychiatric department at The Royal.Β Deepest appreciation goes to JosΓ©e Lavoie, MSW, Fathima Tuan-Kichill, OT, and Dr. Tim Lau, along with their entire team – our heartfelt gratitude to you all.
We are also endlessly grateful to our extensive community of family and friends who have supported us through this journey. We deeply appreciate the many kind words and memories you have all shared about our dad. In particular, we want to recognize the extraordinary kindness to our family shown by our Ottawa-based crew: Wendy and Gord, JosΓ©e, Chris, Margaret & Bernie and especially Lata and Sue β as you know, you are forever part of our family.
Bill was a father that gave his family unconditional love, and we know that we haveΒ truly lostΒ one of the good ones. Rest in peace, Poppa!
